Jermuk Waterfall is one of the most beautiful and charming places in Armenia. It is located in the Vayots Dzor region, near the town of Jermuk. The waterfall has a height of about 70 meters and abundant flow, which makes it impressive and attractive for locals and tourists alike. However, apart from its beauty, the waterfall is also known for its legend.

The legend

This natural wonder, towering over the Arpa Gorge from a height of about 70 meters and resembling fallen hair, is popularly called “Mermaid’s Hair” and weaves another legend. Long ago, at the place of the present waterfall, in the rocks of the old man, stood the castle of a prince whose beautiful daughter was part of the virgin nature. From different parts of the world people came to ask for the hand of the princess, but she refused them all, for her heart belonged to the young, brave and handsome son of a shepherd. Every day after midnight from the window of her bedroom in the castle, the young princess threw the end of a long rope into the valley, with the help of which the shepherd’s son climbed up from the deep gorge to his beloved. The prince, however, soon learning of this, boiled and foamed and cursed his daughter. if you meet the shepherd’s son, let him become a mermaid and never leave the water. However, nothing could keep the young lovers from the temptation of meeting, and once again, to help her lover up to his castle, the beauty, instead of a rope, hung down from the height of the cliff her long and beautiful hair. At the same moment, however, her father’s cruel curse is fulfilled. The beauty turns into a mermaid, and her beautiful hair, falling into the gorge, becomes a marvelous waterfall, which is popularly called “Mermaid’s Hair”.
